Geneviève Fournier is completing a master’s degree in geographic sciences under the supervision of Danièle Bélanger. Her dissertation project focuses on the precariousness of abused temporary migrant workers who have attempted to take advantage of the Open Work Permit for Vulnerable Workers, a Canadian Federal government policy. This project, funded by the FRQSC and SSHRC, is a continuation of research carried out by the Canada Research Chair in Global Migration Processes, in collaboration with several Canadian community organizations. During her bachelor’s degree, Geneviève worked as a research assistant on this project to assess the multi-sectoral impacts of open work permits for vulnerable workers in Quebec, Ontario and British Columbia.
Over the past three years, Geneviève has also worked as a research assistant on Véronique Tessier’s master’s project on the social determinants of health among temporary agricultural workers in Quebec. She completed a research internship funded by the FRQSC and supervised by Adèle Garnier on the multiscalar impacts of welcoming displaced Ukrainians to Canada. At the same time, she completed a Mitacs internship with the community organization RATTMAQ (Réseau d’aide aux travailleuses et travailleurs migrants agricoles du Québec), supervised by Danièle Bélanger.
